How to Switch Language of the Operating System
Windows makes all languages and fonts available. You install languages when you install Windows. If you activate a language that is not actually installed, you are prompted to install it from the Windows CD. Activate the necessary
languages and fonts in your operating system as follows.
Activating languages in the operating system
Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008
- In “Start > Control Panel > Clock, Language and Region Settings > Region and Language Options”, press the “Change keyboards” button in the “Keyboard and Languages” tab. In the “Text Services and Input Languages” dialog that appears, add the required input language and keyboard layout in the “General” tab. In the “Advanced key settings” tab, you can also define a keyboard shortcut for changing the input language. For example if you are creating an Asian-language project in an English operating system, you can use a keyboard shortcut to change the input language if you are switching to another Windows application.
Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012
Change the language setting in the “Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Language”. Add the required keyboard layout in the “Options”. You can define key combinations that are easy to remember in the “Default Settings”
to change the input language. In the “Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region”, you set the language for non-Unicode programs in the “Administrative” tab.

Note If you work with the “Chinese (simplified)” operating system, for example, and you want to set English language support in the WinCC Explorer, you need to set “English” for menus and dialogs: In Windows 7, “Start > Control Panel > Region and Language” > “Keyboard and languages” tab, “Display language”. This field is only available if several language packs ar installed on your computer. In Windows 8, in the “Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Language” in “Options”. This will correctly display the fonts in the dialogs and menus. |
To switch the language of the operating system (OS) in WinCC, you will need to follow these steps:
- Open the Control Panel: Click on the Start button and select Control Panel from the menu.
- Click on “Clock, Language, and Region”: In the Control Panel, click on “Clock, Language, and Region” to open the settings for these options.
- Click on “Language”: In the “Clock, Language, and Region” settings, click on “Language” to open the language settings.
- Add a new language: Click on “Add a language” and select the language you want to add. You may need to download and install the language pack if it is not already installed on your system.
- Set the new language as default: Click on the new language you added and click on “Set as default” to set it as the default language for your operating system.
- Restart the system: Restart your computer to apply the changes.
Once you have switched the language of your operating system, the language settings in WinCC should automatically switch to match the new language. This should allow you to use WinCC in the new language without any additional configuration.
Note that some versions of WinCC may require additional steps to switch the language of the HMI project itself. If this is the case, you may need to consult the WinCC documentation or contact Siemens support for further assistance.
